Timelines & Milestones

Over 25 years of saving homeless pets

When we began this journey in 1997, we made a promise to Chicago's homeless pets: that PAWS would work to end the unnecessary killing each year of tens of thousands of helpless cats and dogs.

Today, we have so much to be grateful for.

PAWS Chicago has led the reduction in homeless pet euthanasia at Chicago Animal Care and Control, the city impoundment facility, by 88.9 percent. We've performed more than 300,000 free and low-cost spay/neuter surgeries, found loving homes for more than 80,000 pets, and consistently saved 98% of the pets who come through our doors. And while these achievements are remarkable, it’s just the beginning.

We wouldn't be here without incredible people like you whose commitment to building a No Kill Chicago has made a real difference in the lives of cats and dogs. Thanks to you, PAWS Chicago is a groundbreaking leader in animal welfare with a passionate army of supporters, volunteers, fosters and adopters who literally save lives every day.

Looking to the future, we’re excited to continue raising standards in animal welfare by responding to the ever-evolving problems homeless pets face. Animals rely on each of us to be their voices and their protectors, and we will be there — in 2024 and beyond.
