Emergency Fosters Needed

Our first transport of Beagles from the Virginia laboratory and breeding facility are at our PAWS Chicago Medical Center. These dogs have never been socialized to humans or other pets, living their entire lives in solitary confinement with inadequate veterinary care and insufficient food. Each one will require a very deliberate rehabilitation and socialization program to learn how to connect with people and pets and adapt to a home environment.

It’s important to recognize these dogs are in a state of overwhelm that most people cannot imagine. In order to keep these Beagles safe and protected as they acclimate to the new world around them, PAWS Chicago behavior experts have designed a very specific Rehabilitation & Socialization program to meet each Beagle’s individual needs. These animals require highly specific foster home environments with foster families who are able to provide specialized care.

The more qualified homes we find, the more transports we can schedule to save more!

The unique needs of these dogs require very specific foster homes. EACH HOME MUST MEET EVERY REQUIREMENT FOR THE SAFETY OF THE BEAGLE AND THE FOSTER FAMILY.

  • Single Family Home not sharing walls or yard with any other homes
  • Fenced in back yard that a Beagle could not escape from
    • The intense fear of new environments makes these dogs a great risk of fleeing. They have never walked on a leash or been exposed to people, the outdoors, noises, etc.
  • No children under the age of 16.
    • All individuals in the home need to understand that the Beagle must be in a quiet space and left alone as he or she acclimates to a home.
  • An understanding that housetraining could take months
    • The unique situation they come from means that normal housetraining protocols are difficult to implement.
  • Acceptance that the Beagle may bark and howl frequently
  • Ability to be kept separate from all other pets in the home
    • It may take a long while before the Beagle will be comfortable with other pets
  • Commitment to foster for a minimum of 2 months
  • Willing to attend weekly zoom sessions with a PAWS Chicago trainer
  • Willing to learn and implement the specific Rehabilitation & Socialization Plan, tailored to the individual needs of your foster Beagle
