What originally drew you to PAWS Chicago?
I’ve been a volunteer with PAWS Chicago since April 2009. I’ve always had a love for animals and when I found PAWS though my sister, I thought it would be a great way to share my love for animals.
Primarily, I spend my time in the Welcome Center at the Adoption Center. During particularly busy times, I lend a hand in Dog Town. Working at the Welcome Center gives me an opportunity to improve my communication and customer service skills!
I have also volunteered in a number of special events over the years, including the Fur Ball, Angels with Tails and PAWSta Parties.
Is there a favorite experience or fondest memory/animal story that has stood out or touched your heart during your time as a volunteer at PAWS Chicago?
Like everyone else at PAWS, the story of Red the Pit Bull is my favorite story to tell.
Red has touched my heart because we face similar challenges every day. We both need a wheelchair to get around, but we don't let it stop us. Every time I see Red in his little chair, he has this great big smile on his face that just makes me smile.
Why do you volunteer for PAWS?
I love being able to talk to people and hopefully help find their lifetime companion.
Do you have any pets or PAWS alumni pets at home?
I currently have a cat, Sabrina, who I rescued from an animal shelter in Maryland, where I was living at the time. I’ve had her since she was five months old and now she's about 9 years old. She's my little constant companion.
What value has volunteering at PAWS Chicago brought you?
I love being a PAWS Chicago volunteer and hope to continue for many years. I love to help animals, and since I can't adopt all of them without having a really big farm, this is the next best thing!
