“Rescue animals are the best. They are so appreciative of a second chance to have a happy, healthy life.”
Eric began volunteering with PAWS Chicago in 2018 as a way to unwind after work.
“Service is the best way to get your mind off your own troubles, and I needed something therapeutic after particularly hectic days. Working with kitties and potential adopters was just the ticket,” said Eric Boberg.
Eric started out by working evenings in Kitty City at our Lincoln Park Adoption Center and has only gotten more involved since retiring from the role of Executive Director of Research at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine.
“Since retiring in March, I’ve been volunteering at the Medical Center, both with L2 and TLC cats.”
L2 and TLC cats have more nuanced behavioral and medical needs and working with them requires some extra training.
“It's very special. I get to spend 100% of my time with animals who are nervous or vulnerable or recovering from trauma. You have to let them approach you at their own pace; you never know all they have been through.”
However, these roles are also the most rewarding.
“Nothing makes me happier than a sick or recovering animal spontaneously crawling into my arms, curling up, and soaking up the love. It is so pure and unconditional. I’m not sure who gets more out of it, me or the kitties.”
