Gerry Sansone
How long have you been volunteering with PAWS Chicago? What originally drew you to the organization?
The search for a furry baby brought me to PAWS; I had just lost the doggie love of my life (rescued female Shih Tzu Lulu) after 16 ½ years and I was desperate for the love, loyalty and companionship of a furry friend. I found my current boy Riley (PAWS name Baz) on the website at 8:00 am one lovely Sunday morning, and arrived by 10:15 to be the first in line to adopt (I learned from prior visits that you best arrive early to avoid disappointment!). I was so impressed with the adoption counselors who explained the program and the process that I decided this was the volunteer opportunity for me. I registered for and attended the orientation session to become a volunteer.
Which PAWS Chicago programs/areas do you volunteer in and why?
My primary volunteer area is adoption counseling at LPAC during pre-pandemic times, and now as a remote adoption counselor and adoption counselor mentor in both capacities. I enjoy speaking with the adopters, in hearing their excitement and anticipation of the new family member they are soon to meet, in listening to stories of dearly loved passed (and past!) pets, and in the follow up stories of new adventures ~ and challenges ~ as the new family member is welcomed into and settles in the home. Additionally, I volunteer at Angels with Tails and off-Site Adoption Events, as a kitty city volunteer and previously at the Medical Center.
3. Do you have a favorite experience or memory from your time volunteering?
Every volunteer shift beings a favorite memory at PAWS. A recent favorite memory occurred when bonded pair Ellen and Bob were adopted in April 2020 on my remote AC shift. I first met Ellen at an off-site adoption event in June 2019, and she touched my heart. Seeing her bond with Bob and find a furever home was so fulfilling!
What motivates you to continue volunteering with PAWS Chicago?
PAWS mission of serving the vulnerable homeless dogs and cats of both Chicago and the country motivates me to continue to volunteer. The volunteer experience offers opportunities to speak with so many people, and pre-pandemic, to meet them as well, to hear their stories of love and devotion to a pet, and to share in their joy when they meet their new best furever friend. I feel connected to the precious dogs and cats being adopted, and knowing that a loving home awaits them.
Do you have any advice for someone who is considering becoming a volunteer?
Get involved! The opportunity to grow as a person, to change a life forever (both fur and flesh!) and to support this mission is so purposeful. In so many ways, the whole experience enriches and expands everyone involved..
