Volunteers of the Month single view | PAWS Chicago

Katie Kume

Katie has achieved many milestones since she began volunteering for PAWS in 2019. She tirelessly worked her way up the ladder from a Level 1 volunteer to a Level 3 volunteer, meaning she’s now able to help care for some of the dogs in need of additional enrichment and training while waiting to find their perfect home. When Katie saw we needed help writing bios for some of our long-term pups, she jumped right in. On top of all of that, Katie frequently helps our foster team— as Lead Volunteer for the Foster Confirmation team, she helps ensure other volunteers are trained and empowered to carry out their roles to keep the foster program running smoothly. Katie never lets us down! Thank you, Katie, for the tremendous amount of time you’ve dedicated to the homeless animals of PAWS Chicago!

How did you decide to volunteer for PAWS?

I had just moved to Chicago and stopped in to look at the dogs (because they’re all perfect), and saw all of the volunteers and thought, “I want to do that, too!”

What’s your favorite part of volunteering at PAWS?

I love coming in to walk the dogs, facilitating playgroups, and helping people find the best dog for them. I also love answering questions from our foster families and writing bios on the website so people can get to know our wonderful animals.

What makes PAWS special?

The No Kill mission because it means PAWS will do whatever it takes to make sure animals of all ages, health, and behavioral quirks find their perfect homes.

What’s your favorite PAWS story?

Right before the pandemic, I asked about fostering a pup and Brian, the Foster Assistant Director, suggested Walter. I walked over to Walter’s room and he was curled up into a tight, little ball with both ears sticking up—he looked like he wanted to be anywhere else. Walter came home with me that day and never left. It’s been over a year and I’m so grateful to PAWS for making sure he had a second chance.

What would you tell someone interested in becoming a PAWS volunteer?

Just try it. There are so many things to do every day and so many ways to help out. Find something that works for you—your help will always be appreciated.

Want to get involved, too? We’re looking for fall interns right now—you can help homeless animals while also getting career experience and training. Applications due by September 15. Learn more
