Martin Aspera
I want to help and support the rescues that help reduce the homeless pet population. That be by offering low cost spay and neutering, supporting owners so they can continue caring for their pets, and rehoming pets that arrive at open-admission facilities. I really enjoy working with fellow volunteers that share the same passion as me.
What originally drew you to PAWS Chicago? How long have you been a volunteer/When did you begin volunteering?
I admire all the work they put into helping reduce the number of homeless pets, not just rehoming but also reducing the number of unwanted pets. Plus helping and supporting those pet owners with limited resources. I started volunteering in the early 2016 at the Clinic. I began with walking dogs then worked my way into photographing dogs at the first chance I got.
Do you have a primary focus when you volunteer?
I focus on photographing senior dogs or long term dogs that might benefit from a professional photo.
Is there one favorite experience or fondest memory/animal story that has stood out or touched your heart during your time as a volunteer at PAWS Chicago?
It's hard to pick one day or one experience. I always have a great time when I'm at the Clinic or the Adoption Center. Everyone (staff or volunteer) is always willing to work as a team, which makes for a better experience.
How does what do you do for a career apply to what you do as a volunteer?
Being a pet photographer, I have learned the skills to successfully capture a pet's personality. I started my pet photography business in 2013. I left my steady job to pursue a career in something I love doing, photographing and helping pets.
Why do you volunteer for PAWS Chicago? What do you enjoy the most about your experiences a volunteer?
I want to help and support the rescues that help reduce the homeless pet population. That be by offering low cost spay and neutering, supporting owners so they can continue caring for their pets, and rehoming pets that arrive at open-admission facilities. I really enjoy working with fellow volunteers that share the same passion as me.
Do you have any PAWS Chicago alumni pets - or any other pets - at home?
I have two senior pit bulls. Both are rescue dogs. One was adopted from the city shelter and I was fostering my second dog until I decided to adopt him.
Have you participated in any PAWS Chicago special events that supports animals?
I really enjoyed helping document a PAWS for Life event with the GusMobile last summer in the Englewood neighborhood. I always gravitate to helping communities in need of help.
What value has volunteering at PAWS Chicago brought you? Anything else you'd like to share regarding your experiences as a PAWS Chicago volunteer?
I really like that fact that I'm given the chance to help to those least among us. In this case, those without a voice. I feel we humans breed them to suit our needs and now they are our responsibility to protect and take care of.
