What originally drew you to PAWS Chicago?  

I started volunteering at PAWS Chicago in June 2013.  My family moved to a new condo on Clybourn and I figured that a volunteer opportunity within walking distance would be perfect. I love animals, so PAWS it was!

 

Do you have a primary focus when you volunteer?

I volunteer two days per week on the early morning shift in Kitty City. While I am fond of dogs, cats really are my favorite!  I have also been helping with holiday mail at the development office for a change of pace.

 

Is there a favorite experience that has stood out during your time as a volunteer?

I fondly remember a kitten named Winky who loved to sit on laps and cuddle. I couldn't figure out why Winky was having a hard time finding a home and was trying to convince my husband that one more cat would be great.  I came in to help one Saturday morning and found my buddy Winky still looking for a home.  I figured I'd have a new cat by the end of my shift.  Then, a young woman came in looking for a cuddly kitten who could keep her company while she worked from home.  I knew Winky would be a perfect match.  I was right...I knew everything would be perfect when the young lady began to tear up and said she thought Winky would be perfect for her.  I was a little sad to let Winky go, but I am sure she is very happy in her new home with a loving mom.

 

How does what do you do for a career apply to what you do as a volunteer?

I worked in Atlanta, Georgia as a registered nurse for 12 years.  When my family moved to Chicago in 2012, I "retired" (for now).  I have met other nurses who volunteer at PAWS and I think that the caring nature of healthcare providers transcends to animals.

 

Why do you volunteer for PAWS Chicago? 

I began volunteering to meet new people since I am relatively new in Chicago.  I have in fact met many very nice and interesting people while at PAWS along with many sweet kitties!  I enjoy the company of the other volunteers and the animals and it keeps me coming back.

 

Do you have any pets at home?

I have a 12-year-old cat named Harley and five-year-old rescue dog named Allie.  

 

Have you participated in any PAWS Chicago special events that support animals?

I volunteered at the Fur Ball prepping goodie bags.  It was fun and also interesting to see how much work goes into the event.

 

What value has volunteering at PAWS Chicago brought you?    

Volunteering at PAWS Chicago has been a wonderful experience.  I get a lot of pleasure helping the cats and knowing that they have a chance for finding loving homes. PAWS Chicago is an outstanding organization and I am proud to be a part of it.
