Volunteers of the Month single view | PAWS Chicago

Michelle Starkman

I can’t think of anything better than caring for dogs and cats and helping them find their forever homes! It’s rewarding in many ways and I feel blessed to be able to do what I can for the PAWS animals.

How long have you been volunteering with PAWS Chicago?

I began volunteering in 2014, just before PAWS Chicago’s North Shore Adoption Center officially opened at Highland Park's Petco.

What originally drew you to the organization?

The fact that there are always countless homeless animals out in the world breaks my heart. I heard about the wonderful work that PAWS Chicago does and decided to join in the crusade.

Which PAWS Chicago programs/areas do you volunteer in and why?

I started as a volunteer when PAWS brought a few dogs into Petco on weekends. After the opening of the North Shore Adoption Center, I worked with the dogs for a while, then Kitty City came to be and I have been working with the cats ever since. Don't get me wrong...I love cats and dogs equally!

Do you have a favorite experience or memory from your time volunteering?

I remember the immensely powerful feeling of joy I felt when I witnessed my first dog adoption. I can still see the pair as they walked toward the exit into their new lives!

What motivates you to continue volunteering with PAWS Chicago?

There will always be animals in need, and to have the ability to work with PAWS to help as many of them as I can is all I need to keep me going.

Do you have any advice for someone who is considering becoming a volunteer?

I would tell them to sign up right away! I can’t think of anything better than caring for dogs and cats and helping them find their forever homes! It’s rewarding in many ways and I feel blessed to be able to do what I can for the PAWS animals.
