Patie and Danielle Binfa
What originally drew you to PAWS Chicago?
The love and respect we have for animals – especially dogs. We have been dedicated to PAWS Chicago since May 2010.
Do you have a primary focus when you volunteer?
My daughter, Daniela, has an intrinsic gift with dogs. She has volunteered in Kitty City, however she prefers Dog Town.
Is there one favorite experience that has stood out during your time as a volunteer?
One of the fondest memories I have at paws was when two little dogs were available for adoption together - Owen and Grommit. Owen was an extremely shy little dog that Daniela immediately fell in love with and no one could seem to approach. Daniela was determined to establish some form of relationship to help him with his shyness. She succeeded. After a few attempts, Owen became very fond of her and appeared to always look for her. Although she was devastated when she found out they had been adopted (together), she knew they went to a good and loving family. She has never forgotten them.
How does what do you do for a career apply to what you do as a volunteer?
I teach at the community college level. As an Associate Professor concentrating on teaching law/ legal classes for students interested in law enforcement I always incorporate an underlying theme of moral obligations to society within my teachings.
Why do you volunteer for PAWS Chicago?
Being able to volunteer with my daughter not only supports our belief in giving back to the community and team work but, most importantly, it fosters kindness and a broader understanding of today’s society allowing me the opportunity to facilitate with her moral development.
Have you participated in any PAWS Chicago special events?
We are always looking to volunteer above and beyond what is requested of us. Therefore, we often participate behind-the-scenes such as stuffing goodie bags for Fur Ball, mailings, etc. I will also be participating at Animal Magnetism this year.
What value has volunteering at PAWS Chicago brought you?
Based on the statement and through the commitment to the Chicago community, PAWS Chicago serves as an exemplary foundation for the collective advancement of providing animals with a safe haven and changing the culture through ethical and moral values.
